Latest Updates from Our Project:

Materials Collected and Work Begins
over 1 year ago – Mon, Sep 05, 2022 at 07:19:23 AM

Hi folks,

Sorry for the delay! I wanted to wait for the arrival of a couple things before updating you and those things were a little delayed in arriving.

First I just wanted to say the surveys are at 90% completion , which means I am able to confidently move forward on work as I have a pretty good idea of numbers, but if you are reading this please double check that you have completed your survey because I’d like to finish them up completely. If you didn’t receive yours let me know and I can resend it.

Now on to materials!

The Blades

The blacksmith Matt Jenkins from @cloverdaleforge was working hard to get all of our Santoku blades forged this month and the other day I was able to go pick them up.

They are fantastically crafted, with a very thin edge and nice even taper toward the tip. This is a huge chunk of work and saves me a lot of time. If I had had to forge all of these myself I like wouldn’t have been done til October.

Now I can begin work on grinding and hardening the blades.

The Handles

Back in July I mailed off a giant box of wood to Texas for resin stabilizing and just a few days ago it arrived back, much heavier than when I sent it. The vacuum infusion of resin into wood adds durability and water resistance to the wood, and is also an opportunity to colour the lighter maple wood black. The resin is baked after infusion, hardening it so it becomes a permanent part of the wood. I can now begin cutting and drilling it out for handle production.

The black maple blocks. Somewhere underneath there is a bunch of whiskey barrel oak as well.
This was why the update took so long. The wood was delayed at the border as it was inspected by customs.

While I was waiting…

I was no idle while I waited for the delivery of the blades and wood. I began forging and crafting the smaller Utility knives myself. As of right now I have 8 blades forged, hardened and ground. I will be attaching the handles this week and so should have the first 8 knives done by next week if all goes well.

First the small rectangles are cut from the saw blade. Then they are forged into knife blades, in this case the Utility knives.
The forged blades are then profiled, hardened and precisely ground. The tang is narrowed, and shoulder are cut in to keep things square when mounting to the handle.

My plan is to work in small batches like this, a few weeks at a time, and then shipping the knives out bit by bit. Shipping will begin later this month and will likely be completed sometime early in the new year.

From here on out I will send regular monthly updates to let you know where I am at.

Thank you for your patience and support!

Marc

Hi folks,

Quick update:

I have spent the last couple weeks organizing the forthcoming BackerKit survey.  You should be receiving yours sometime this week. Initially (today) only a few of you will receive surveys just so I can make sure its all working as needed. I'll be sending the remainder of the surveys after I receive the first few back.

Please fill out your surveys as soon as you can. It's only once I have all of them back that will I have a final count of numbers from the campaign.  Once I have this final count I can begin making knives in earnest.

For now though I am  doing what I can. I cut all of the handle wood and shipped it off to Texas last week for stabilizing. I expect to be receiving that back in September. I have also begun work on a dozen or so blades that I had forged in the spring in preparation for the campaign. An additional 40 blanks are in the hands of Matt Jenkins at Cloverdale Forge. He will be forging them in August as well. If you haven't had the pleasure of seeing Matt's work check him out on Instagram @cloverdaleforge on Instagram.

Anyway that's all for now! Please follow our work at @origin_handcrafted

Thanks,

Marc

That's a Wrap!

Hi folks,

Just wanted to report in and say that as of June 30th the Origin Culinary Series campaign is complete and fully funded! This means that the project is moving forward and that you'll be receiving your rewards in the coming months :)

By this point Kickstarter should have reached out to you to finalize your payment details.  You will have about 2 weeks to get everything in order for that, and then your pre-order purchase will officially go through. If you have any issues with payment you will be provided ample opportunity to fix any issues as well.

Once payment is complete we'll be sending you a survey to finalize your reward choices and also establish your mailing information. The survey will also have a few special add-ons that weren't available during the campaign so keep your eyes out for those.

After the surveys are complete, production begins. I'll be sending monthly updates, but the best way to follow allow is via our Instagram account @origin_handcrafted

That's all for now! Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you so much for your support!

Hi everyone,

I am happy to report that as of a couple days ago we are officially funded! We rolled right on by our goal and are moving onward and upward!

I want to thank everyone who has supported our project so far.  This is our third successful campaign in three years and yet I am still amazed and honoured by the support we receive. It's really amazing and we are so appreciative. So thank you!

That said, we aren't done yet. There is still a week to go in our campaign and we are doing our best to keep this momentum going. If any of you feel inclined to share our project on social media that would be incredible.

Thank you for your support!

Talk soon,

Marc
